Integrating Smart Locks With Your Home Security System

As it becomes cheaper and easier to use, more people are becoming interested in using technology to protect their homes. One of the devices that has been gaining popularity recently is smart locks. If you install smart locks in your home, there will be no more:

  • worrying about lost keys
  • having to drive across town to let someone in who forgot their keys
  • keys hidden under rocks, in plants or in other places that burglars can easily find

Let’s take a deeper look at smart locks, how they work, and how they integrate with a home security system.

What are smart locks and how do they work?

Smart locks allow users to enter their home, or provide others access to their home without requiring a traditional key. Instead, a person uses a smartphone app, key fob, or manually entered access code to wirelessly verify and mechanically unlock the door.

There are three main types of smart locks that the average consumer can install in their home:

  • Those that fit over an existing deadbolt
  • Those that replace half of a deadbolt mechanism
  • Those that replace the entire deadbolt

In addition to locking and unlocking the door, some smart locks can provide a running log of device activity. Information like this can be useful for checking to see if the kids got home from school or if teenagers really did get home before their curfew. However this feature is only available on locks that offer multiple user keys.

Another feature that many smart locks offer is the ability to create unique entry codes for visitors. For example, if your neighbor is coming over to feed your cat and water your plants while you are out of town, you can make a code that is only good for the duration of your vacation.

How do smart locks integrate with home security systems?

Smart locks are home automation devices that branch out into the realm of home security. In order to be integrated, a smart lock needs to be able to communicate with the rest of your home security system and with your phone. Most will do that using one of three common communication methods: Bluetooth, Z-Wave or Wi-Fi.

Both the lock and your home security system need to use the same communication method, like Z-Wave, in order to be compatible. If they are compatible, generally both can be controlled right from the same app. For our customers, that app is SupremeConnect.

So, when you are leaving for work in the morning, simply open the app and you will be able to arm your security system and lock the front door right from the palm of your hand.

Which lock should you choose?

There are a number of smart locks on the market, but here at Supreme Security Systems, we recommend Kwikset locks for use in residential applications. Kwikset offers several models with different finish colors to match your home, some options are pictured below:
