Recently, a burglar was arrested for breaking into the rapper 50 Cent’s vacant Connecticut mansion, which is currently for sale. According to ABC News, the suspect was caught after setting off an entry alarm at the 50,000 square foot home. The Daily Mail reports that the suspect was found after 50 Cent’s property manager was alerted by the security system provider, and the rapper’s CCTV video surveillance system showed live footage of the burglar creeping through the garage. The police were then alerted by the central monitoring station, and the thief was arrested.

Burglary at 50 Cent’s Vacant Home Thwarted By Home Security System: What Home Sellers Can Learn

There are many valuable lessons to be gleaned from this incident as it encompasses multiple aspects of home security, especially for houses on the market.

The first lesson to be learned revolves around the importance of having a professionally installed home security system at a high value property, especially if the property is for sale. Because of the rapper’s status and the grandiosity of the house, it was extremely easy for the burglar to determine that the property was vacant. But it’s not just high profile celebrities who are in danger of being robbed, in the age of the Internet, it’s easy for burglars to simply search the web for house listings in their area, and then target those homes.

Although 50 Cent is a celebrity, this could have happened to anyone.

As reported by The Daily Mail, 50 Cent’s property manager was able to see a live video feed of the burglar in the garage.

This feature is invaluable for home sellers who are forced to leave their property vacant for extended periods of time. Luckily for the rapper, the burglar remained on the property long enough to be caught by the police, but even if he had escaped, the CCTV video surveillance feature captured the burglar’s image and it would have aided the police in eventually finding the criminal.

As we’ve written about in the past, burglars often break into homes by attempting to gain access to the property through the garage, and this is exactly what the burglar who targeted 50 Cent’s home did. In the eyes of a burglar, a garage can often create the easiest pathway into a home. This is because garages are typically isolated from the rest of the house, and breaking in from the garage seems less risky to the thief. Burglars also love to target garages because they often have ground level windows and they typically store expensive, easily resellable items like power tools, lawn mowers, cars and other high value items. Smartly, 50 Cent had security cameras and an alarm installed in his garage, and this protected his property.

The attempted burglary of 50 Cent’s mansion provides home sellers with a comprehensive example of an effective home security approach. Thanks to his security system, the rapper avoided losing valuable possessions and the burglar was caught almost immediately. If you currently have a home listed on the market, or are considering selling your home anytime soon, consider installing a home security system with CCTV video surveillance as it protects your home whiles it’s vacant and gives you peace of mind.
