security tools that prevent package theft

Package theft or porch piracy as it is sometimes called has become increasingly popular with the rise of online shopping. So much so that roughly 30% of online shoppers report having a package stolen from outside their home. While there are many resources out there that offer solutions such as having packages delivered to your workplace or requiring a signature for package delivery, most of these solutions add some inconvenience to your delivery process. Thankfully, we have a few solutions that can help you keep your packages (and the rest of your home) safe and sound. Take a look below to see our recommendations.

1. CCTV Surveillance System

It should come as no surprise that having a surveillance system is a fantastic way to deter porch pirates. Numerous studies and surveys featuring ex-con interviews have been published over the years, and it now seems to be common knowledge that visible cameras are a big deterrent for would-be burglars. We can only imagine that porch pirates looking to make a quick buck off of your packages feel the same way. If you have cameras positioned on your porch, toward the front of your house, or by your garage, the chances are you will get a good look at anyone who attempts to steal your packages. This doesn’t ensure that a package theft won’t steal your deliveries, but with footage of the thief, police have a good chance of catching the perpetrator. Not to mention, the cameras themselves should be more than enough to send package thieves toward easier targets.

2. The Video Doorbell

While a surveillance system is a fantastic tool for deterring theft, you may be searching for something a little more…hands on. If that is the case, you may want to look into getting a video doorbell. A typical system comes with 4 main pieces: a motion detector, a camera, a two-way audio communication device, and a mobile application. These devices work together perfectly to help you detect and deter any would be package thieves. How?

First, your motion detector detects the presence of someone on your porch. Second, your mobile application notifies you of this presence. Third, your video camera shows you via your mobile application who is on your porch and what they are up to. Fourth, using the two-way communication device via your mobile application, you can talk to the person on your porch. The video below shows a perfect example of how this can completely shut down package thieves.

3. Smart Locks

So far, we’ve looked at two fantastic options for deterring and catching package thieves, but neither of these solutions actually guarantee that your package won’t get stolen. Despite being caught on camera and having someone let them know they have been caught in the act, some porch pirates may choose to walk off with your package anyway. Smart locks, however, give you the option of taking that choice out of the package thief’s hands. Unlike standard locks, that can only be unlocked in person with a key, smart locks allow you to unlock your doors remotely.

If you are comfortable with your service carrier, you could use smart locks to unlock your door when a delivery person arrives at your home. They could then open your front door, place the package gently inside, and close the door behind them (assuming there is no legal minutia preventing them from doing so). Of course, you may want to install a video doorbell system so you can monitor exactly when they arrive and leave, but the functionality of this tool brings something that can’t be promised by many other services, the complete assurance that your packages are safe.
